Help with a paper [05 Oct 2009|02:17pm]

Hi guys,

I am a 21 y/o student at SFSU right now. I am writing a paper on the acculturation issues between hetero and homosexual Latino males...so what does this mean? Basically what's the difference between "becoming" Americanized between a gay and straight Latino guy. So I am looking for 2 volunteers from each sexuality (preferably someone who goes to SFSU) to just talk with me about their experience growing up and what it means to them about being an American and how it affects their culture. This "study" is about young adults so 18-25 age range. This is really informal and would probably take no more than 15-20 minutes of your time.

If this sounds like something you would be willing to do, please let me know. I would really appreciate it - thanks!

Non Sequitor... [20 Aug 2009|09:41am]

[ mood | determined ]

Several years ago... someone posted an animation either on sfsu or sfsyou. Can't remember which, and have been combing BOTH trying to find the link.

It was an animated (possibly Flash) minimovie thing of a Banana dancing on a street corner to Raffi's Bananaphone.

This post was followed by several comments which included links to other bananaphone movies that were... funny but somewhat gory.

I think it was posted on one of these two communities as a "hey look at this, isn't this funny" thing, but it was actually animated by someone attending SFState (or attended). THAAAT'S why I remember it being one of these two communities.

I've been combing both communities trying to find the link... and I simply cannot find it. It would have been between SY 2002/03-2004/05.

Does anyone remember it? Can anyone find it? Is it possible someone may still have or can find a link to it?

(The combing through the archives was a nice walk down memory lane though, :) I miss the campus sometimes. )

Help please?

(Cross posted in sfsu & sfsyou.)

Vespa! [06 Sep 2008|11:07am]

So Im considering getting a vespa...b/c they look cool and they're portable (relatively) and it's easier to get around the city in. So I was wondering if we have anyone that owns one on here and if they could give some insight into the pros and cons of it, if there's a special kind of license required, etc. Thanks in adv!

Free & FUN Language Classes! [13 Aug 2008|01:22pm]

[ mood | Inspired ]

Bonjour! Buenos Dias! Ni hao! Merhaba! Mabuhay!

My name is Freidricka and I volunteer with a FUN not-for-profit organization called The Global Language Network (GLN). We're working hard to make language classes FREE and accessible to the San Francisco community. [By the way, try to guess which languages I used to say "hello" in the beginning and "thanks" in the end of this email]

Did you know…
…that right now 260+ GLN volunteers are teaching their native languages (55+ languages!) in Washington, DC to hundreds of community members.

We've partnered with the World Bank to train teachers and help with language resources. Right now we're just in Washington, DC, because only people in DC want to have FUN learning languages—and for FREE—right?
No way! I told everyone at GLN that San Francisco would definitely be interested in something like this, right???

So here's where I need your help…

This is our chance to bring free language classes to the community…but only if we get enough support from YOU!!

FREE language classes in San Francisco: as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Invite your friends to join Global Language Network - San Francisco (http://tinyurl.com/GLN-San-Fran-Facebook).

2. Help us find 1 or more college students to set-up a student group at their college.

3. GLN supplies new student group all resources necessary to start offering FREE language classes.

Start helping now to get GLN set-up in San Francisco by fall 2008!

The Global Language Network is a not-for-profit organization that makes the education of language and culture free to everyone.

Email us or just yell really loud if you can help out with our outreach efforts in San Fran or any other location.
And if you're a college student (or make decisions for a college student) and want to help set up a GLN Chapter at your college let us know!

The founder of GLN, Andrew, will be in San Francisco in the next several days, so this would be a perfect opportunity to meet and discuss!

For volunteering and/or entertaining information please contact: Info@TheGLN.org

To help set-up a GLN Chapter at your college please contact: Create@TheGLN.org

Thanks! Merci! Gracias! Bedankt! Obrigado! Salamat!

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at:  www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

Congrats to Price Trochet who won on Wheel of Fortune tonight against Harvard and College of Charleston! I unfortunately was not lucky enough to watch it since I was in class, but my good friend was awesome enough to keep me updated throughout the show. Good job Price!

Hey, I was wondering where people knew where to get a fake ID. I know it sounds shady, but our GER class is going to go to a Beergarden or some sort b/c we have some German people coming to visit. Im only 19 but I would like to go. It's pretty "innocent" right guys?...guys...?

Arg, this is kind of late. Future reference? [02 Oct 2007|09:31pm]

Hey this is mostly aimed @ Classics students: Check Project Gutenberg before you buy those old books!! I just saved myself $16.

Project Gutenberg's aim is to upload the complete texts/illustrations from books that are now in the public domain. :D I didn't have to buy Livy's history of Rome; I downloaded it!

I hope this helps, even if not for school stuff. :)

Looking for depressed college grads [23 Sep 2007|09:19pm]

I apologize for the redundancy as I see one of my Magazine Writing classmates already posted here, but I am searching for college graduates (preferably recent grads) who are maybe frustrated because they're struggling to find a full time job in their major or are still maybe not even sure what they want to be doing with their lives.

It's a tough world out there and I think it's important to get these former students' voices out.

So if you or someone you know is a recent graduate and is feeling depressed about it. Please contact me by commenting on this post or shooting me an email at carinaw@sfsu.edu.

Pet hotels [17 Sep 2007|08:54pm]

Does anybody here use San Francisco's various pet hotels when they head out for vacation? In addition, has anyone here traveled with your pet, or taken your pet to a hotel around here in the city? What's it like? Could I use you as an anecdote for my magazine writing class?

I'm writing an article (just for my class, not for the paper) about pet hotels and pet friendly hotels. Please let me know if you've had an affiliation with either of these? I COULD REALLY USE THE HELP! :)

random question [15 Sep 2007|01:53pm]

Ok, I know some people here know people at CCSF, I don't, so I've got a question. Does CCSF use SSNs as Student ID numbers? Because they sure look the same...

New class, spots available-- PLSI 427, German Politics and Film [29 Aug 2007|03:39pm]

(cross posted to sfsu)

Need PLSI or elective units? Interested in German film and/or politics? Check out PLSI 427, German Politics!

This class is both politics and film-oriented. It's a brand new class this semester, and taught by a great professor named Angelika Von Wahl, who herself is originally from Germany, and thus has a lot of firsthand knowledge of the subject. (Don't worry, her English is perfect!)

At the moment there are only 7 people signed up-- that means 23 free spots! Considering how packed all the other classes are, it's surprising that this one has been overlooked. Plus, we need people to sign up to keep it going!

The class is once a week, Tuesdays from 4:10-7:50. 4 units.

On a personal note, I absolutely need this class to continue in order to graduate on time this semester. My work schedule won't permit me to take any classes on Thursday or Friday, so it's absolutely crucial that at least 5 more people sign up. Please give it some consideration if you have any interest in the subject.

If you have any questions about the class, please direct them to Prof. Von Wahl at avonwahl@sfsu.edu . Thanks for reading!
